DFA: 21 Filipino seafarers onboard ship hijacked by Somali pirates

abs-cbnNEWS.com 10/16/2008 4:10 PM

The Department of Foreign Afairs (DFA) on Thursday confirmed 21 Filipino seafarers were onboard a bulk carrier ship which Somali pirates hijacked off the coast of Somalia.

DFA Undersecretary Esteban Conejos Jr. identified the hijacked vessel as M/V African Sanderling.

Citing reports from the Philippine embassy in Nairobi, Conejos said the vessel is a Panama-flagged, South Korea-owned, Japan-operated bulk carrier.

In a text message to abs-cbnNEWS.com, Conejos said the DFA has already instructed the Philippine embassies in Seoul, Tokyo and Nairobi to coordinate with the ship owners and operators and with international maritime authorities on efforts to secure the early and safe release of the crew members.

VP Noli: Stay in ‘safe zone’

Meanwhile, Vice President Noli De Castro urged shipping companies not to go beyond the safe zone to prevent possible pirate attacks.

“I want to reiterate our appeal to the international shipping companies to take extra precautionary measures and to strictly follow the directive to limit voyages to the "safe zone" or the Maritime Security Patrol Area (MPSA),” said De Castro.

Agence France-Presse reported Wednesday that Somali pirates hijacked a vessel with 21 Filipino crew in the Gulf of Aden.

“We are still awaiting further developments on the latest Somali piracy case,” said De Castro.

The report cited the International Maritime Bureau’s piracy reporting center in Kuala Lumpur. The vessel was sailing from the Middle East to Asia when Somali pirates attacked it.

“The coalition Navies, consisting of multinational naval forces of US, Britain, France among others, are patrolling and giving assistance to vessels passing the MPSA,” he said.

De Castro said the government has also implemented the double hazard pay scheme for Filipino seamen who will be traversing the said risk zone. Filipino seafarers are likewise given the option to disembark from the ship should they decide not to continue with the voyage because of the risks involved.

Electrical Summer Outing!

Yipee! Puerto Del sol

Gawad Kalinga (A Jphil.Project)

It’s as if the volunteers from Electrical Department never get tired of office works for we made Ourselves available before 8:00 o’clock at the Jphil Office. It’s the jump-off time onwards to “Gawad Kalinga (GK) Housing Project for Poor” in Christ the King Subdivision, Talon IV, Las Pinas City.

Our team was headed by ME (Ms. Bennalou Jugadora along) with Ms. Meilyn Gesta of
Procurement Department, both were Jphil-
GK Committee Members. Manny Villorente,
Chrisper Perey, Tyrone Guico, and the dorm
mates Felix Bermoy Jr., Mark Leo Timbas,
Edrei Cadag, Carl Dalusung, Agie Escano
and Val Alog completed the ten mighty warriors
at heart of the Electrical Department. GK Volunteers arrived at site at around 9:00
o’clock and they were welcomed us'by the smiles
and hospitality of GK residents and beneficiaries.

Our group was divided into two: one group became busy for the Sibol Grade School Pupils and the other group for the real battle, the Construction site.
(me=DMs. Bennalou Jugadora and Mr. Agie Escano were assisted by the Sibol Grade School Teachers for some storytelling and fun games. Sibol graders ranging from two to six years old according to Ms. Jugadora were very cooperative and fun to play with. Prizes were given to those students who participated well and a small treat for merienda were given to everyone before the “teachers” depart from the Sibol classroom. Truly, a simple thoughtfulness and spending a part of your valuable time will bring a great smile from the heart of those kids in the Sibol room. Such a memorable experience as the “teachers” expressed their feelings.

Going to the Construction site, the other team was guided by the GK residents and beneficiaries. Everyone is excited of what the site will cater for them and what really would they be doing for the construction.
Though each member of this team don’t do this stuff normally, still you can see their enthusiasm in making even a little help to build the house. The flooring of one house should be leveled and therefore excess soils and small rocks were to be put out. Some loosen the ground while others shoveled the soil in sacks and put it in one corner. The other house is ready for the concrete flooring, so they were
assigned to do the “pagbibistay” (separating tiny sand to large ones using the strainer). We enjoyed' the construction works. Muscles of electrical guys were stretched as their sweat flows all over their bodies Bayanihan and camaraderie were very evident to
every volunteer as they help each other whenever one needs it. “Lumpiang Gulay” served as their merienda after a tiring work.
At 12:00 o’clock noon, Our team left the GK village with the hearts full of joy because we all know that even the simple thing we've have done, this could be a big start for the GK residents. Especially for the children of Sibol, this could encourage them to aim high for they see their future in a clearer view.
